The Bangladesh Tea Board has provided a grant of Tk 18.55 lakh from the Bangladesh Tea Workers Welfare Fund to the tea garden workers and their dependents in the financial year 2020-21. In order to encourage education and improve the quality of education, 469 meritorious students who passed SSC and HSC examinations were given education welfare grants, grants for marriage of daughters of 128 workers and special welfare grants were distributed to 39 students.
Donation checks distributed among tea workers of Mazdihi Tea Garden in Srimangal Upazila of Moulvibazar District on Wednesday (June 24) at 11 am Acting Director of Project Development Unit (PDU) of Bangladesh Tea Board Dr. AKM Rafiqul Haque said this.
Dr. AKM Rafiqul Haque further said that the present Chairman of the Tea Board Major General Md. Zahirul Islam, NDC, PSC is taking various effective steps for the overall development of the tea industry. Following this, a huge amount of money was given for the welfare of tea workers this year. Donation checks have already been distributed to the gardens.
Mazdihi tea garden manager Mr. S. K. Barua said welfare grants are playing an important role in improving the living standards of the workers and increasing the enthusiasm of the workers for education.
It may be mentioned that in February this year, applications were invited from all the tea garden workers in the country to provide grants under the Bangladesh Tea Workers Welfare Fund. After verification and selection of the application form, the grant was finally given to the selected candidates.
PDU Assistant Development Officer Mr. Mohammad Moniruzzaman Akand, Assistant Managers of Majdihi Tea Garden and Panchayat General Secretary Mr. Satya Narayan Chhatri and grantee tea workers and their pets were present among others at the check distribution ceremony.
