The cabinet has given final approval to the draft ‘Local Government (Municipality) (Amendment) Act, 2021’ with the provision of canceling municipalities if arrears of salaries and allowances remain for more than a year. At the same time, provision has been made in the amended law to appoint an administrator in the municipality at the end of the five-year term of the mayor.
The approval was given at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (October 4th). Ministers and state ministers from the Cabinet Division of the Prime Minister and the Secretariat attended the meeting from Ganobhaban via video conference.
After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam informed about the approval at a press briefing.
According to the amended law, elections must be held within six months of the appointment of an administrator in the municipality. The cabinet secretary also said that the name of the ‘secretary’ of the municipality is being changed to ‘municipal executive officer’.
