People of Padmapar in fear of collapse in Goalanda, launch ghats and ferry ghats at risk

Sheikh Momin, Goalanda (Rajbari): In the last few days, the water level in the Padma has risen and strong currents have been created in the river. This has caused erosion in the important Daulatdia ferry and launch ghat areas of the country. River erosion has suddenly started since dawn on Friday. Geo bags of at least 50 meters area collapsed at 3 points in Ferry Ghat No. 1 area from Bhangan Launch Ghat. This has created a big risk in the area. More than one and a half hundred families of Majid Sheikh’s neighborhood adjacent to the ferry terminal are under threat.

Turning to the ground, it is seen that the Water Development Board is throwing geo bags in the launch ghat area on an emergency basis to prevent river erosion. Suddenly they stopped throwing Geo bags. Due to their negligence, 5 new families went to the river today. In protest, the people of the river erosion area got angry and blocked the Dhaka-Khulna highway with tin rice. Later the police came and brought the situation under control. At that time no action was taken by the Water Development Board and BIWTA authorities in charge of protecting the ferry wharf. Intense currents are flowing along the side.

Former UP members Babu Mollah, Benazir Ahmed, Bilas Bepari and some others said, “We have been telling the BIWTA authorities about the risk of erosion here for a long time.” Sometimes a few days ago some Geo bags were dropped. But in the last 3 days, even though an area of 50 meters has collapsed at 3 points, they are not taking any action. If the water level rises a little more, the erosion situation will take a terrible turn. Then the land of at least 200 families will disappear along with the ghat.

Sahera Begum, Benazir Bepari, Rafiq Sheikh, Momin Sardar, Babu Mandal and many others who have lost their lands in the riverbed said that our village is about to collapse as influential people cut the sand from the area during the dry season. However, it is still possible to protect the houses on the banks of the river if the Geo bags are thrown in the right way.

Daulatdia Union Parishad Chairman Abdur Rahman Mandal said erosion had started in Daulatdia’s launch ghat, ferry ghat and a few villages adjacent to the ghat and a few more villages upstream of the ghat. In addition to the ghats, many families are at risk. I urge the Water Development Board and BIWTA authorities to take action on an urgent basis.

Goalanda Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Azizul Haque Khan Mamun said, “I have informed the chairman of Water Development Board and BIWTA to take urgent action after seeing the erosion situation.” Hopefully action will be taken soon.
