Dulal Mia, Sunamganj Correspondent: At least one passenger was killed and 10 others were injured when a passenger bus lost control and drowned at Joykalas junction in South Sunamganj upazila of Sunamganj district.The accident took place on June 22 at 9:30 am.
The deceased was identified as Sultan Uddin, 25, son of Anar Uddin of Thakurbhog village in West Birgaon union of South Sunamganj upazila.
The deceased Sultan Uddin worked as a bakery worker in Sylhet. The incident took place on the way back from Sylhet. Police and eyewitnesses said the non-stop passenger bus was coming from Sylhet to Sunamganj at 8:30 am on Tuesday. On the way, the bus collided with a private car at Joykalas junction in South Sunamganj and fell into the canal. Upon receiving the news, the police and fire service people rescued the passengers of the bus. At that time 10 passengers were injured. The names of the injured passengers could not be ascertained. Police recovered the body of a passenger and sent it to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
The injured have taken first aid locally. Rukia Begum said, “I was at a shop next to the scene on Tuesday morning. At that time, a passenger bus going from Sylhet to Sunamganj reached in front of Muktijoddha Bhaskarya on the north side of Joykalas village and was hit by a speeding private car from behind. The passenger bus lost control and fell into the side canal with the passengers. A passenger jumped out of the bus and was seriously injured when the bus hit him.
South Sunamganj Police Station SI Debashish Sutradhar said a Sunamganj-bound non-stop passenger bus from Sylhet collided with a private car and fell into the water, killing one person and injuring several others. The identity of the dead passenger was not known. Fire service personnel are trying to rescue the crashed bus.
