Special Correspondent :
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has said that National Identity Card (NID) cannot be taken from the Election Commission (EC) by letter. He said, NID is not a table-chair that I took away. If you want to take NID activities, you have to sit in dialogue with the EC.
He was speaking to reporters after inaugurating a medical camp at the Election Training Institute building in Agargaon on Wednesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, on another occasion, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that there would be no complication if NID services came to the Home Ministry.
In response to a question, the CEC said it could not be said that a final decision had been taken to take NID to the government. But they want to take. It cannot be said that we will not give. We are not in that position. It is important that we sit down with them. We will explain to them the position we have in the discussion, then we will see what the decision will be. Now it cannot be said in advance. Asked whether the Election Commission was being approached from the top echelons of the government, the CEC said, “The cabinet is a high level for us.” We received a letter from the cabinet. We answered them. If they have formally met with the Secretary of the Commission to give us their views or suggestions on this matter or what they want to do, then our statement will be presented.
Asked if there was an opportunity to discuss the transfer of NID services, the CEC said, “Yes.” It is a very big organization. So there must be a discussion about how to take it or not. It’s not a table chair that I picked up. And I have said many times that the Election Commission wants NID to be with us. Asked if the NID service would be disrupted, the CEC said, “We will have difficulty.” However, the issue will be discussed at the secretary level. We will tell them our advantages and disadvantages.
The CEC said they may have some reason why the government wants to take the NID service from the Election Commission. And we also have some arguments, there will be a dialogue about these. Their statement is that NID services are not under the purview of the Election Commission and this argument is correct. It’s not really a matter of having it in any other country. And our argument is – this work is the result of our hard work. We have created thousands of dedicated staff to do this work and they are highly professional.
The CEC said that after so many mistakes, the staff of the Election Commission has been able to create a very high level of technological work. The Election Commission is proud of this. In this context, we said that it is not possible for any other department to recreate so many people in 12 years. Their argument is that they will take the things of the government. They tell us, you are not the government. We say, we are not the government but when the government needs, we can provide those services to the government.
Asked what he said in response to a letter from the Cabinet Division Election Commission, the CEC told reporters that they had only said that they were in the earlier decision. They will sit with us, there will be a decision on whether there is an accounting process with the infrastructure. Asked if there is a possibility of keeping NID in the EC, the CEC said it could not be said right now.
There will be no complication when NID services come to the country: Home Minister
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said that there will be no complications if NID services come to the Home Ministry from the Election Commission. He was responding to a question from reporters at a function held at the old jail convention hall in the capital on Wednesday afternoon.
The Home Minister said that what is being said about NID is absurd. We are deliberately bringing NID services under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Everyone has an opinion here. Expert advice has also been taken.
