Sylhet Representative: Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) leader Maulana Abdul Aziz alias Hanif has been sentenced to death by a court in connection with a 2005 series of bombings at the Kadamtali Central Bus Terminal in Sylhet.
Judge Mominunnesa of Sylhet’s Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court pronounced the verdict at noon on Sunday (December 13th). The matter has been confirmed by the spokesperson of the court APP Jubayer.
It may be mentioned that on 17 August 2005, JMRI militants detonated bombs in 29 places including 13 in Sylhet, five in Sunamganj, five in Habiganj and five in Moulvibazar. The bomb blast shook Adalatpara in Sylhet and other important areas including the deputy commissioner’s office.
At around 11:15 a.m., the militants detonated bombs in 13 areas including Adalatpara in Sylhet city, under the stairs of the deputy commissioner’s office, Shahi Eidgah, Nayasarak, Kadamtali bus terminal and a nursery in Lama Bazar. Separate cases were filed in these structures in the concerned police stations.
A case was filed against Abdul Aziz alias Hanif and other unidentified militants at Dakshin Surma Police Station in connection with the attack on Kadamtali bus terminal.
The charge was framed on May 27, 2014 under the Special Powers Act. In court, the militant Abdul Aziz admitted his involvement in the attack and also testified under section 164.
