BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s sentence has been suspended for another six months. However, he will not be able to go abroad.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told reporters at the secretariat on Sunday.
At the time, the home minister said, “Her younger brother made an application to extend the conditional bail and medical treatment she (Khaleda Zia) received.” We have approved that application after due diligence. The sentence has been suspended for the fourth time for six months, upholding the previous conditions.
Earlier on September 11, the law ministry recommended extending the moratorium on Khaleda Zia’s family’s request. Then Law Minister Anisul Haque told Samakal, I have recommended. As far as I have heard, the Home Ministry has approved it.
Khaleda Zia, who was sentenced to 1৭ years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust corruption cases, has been in jail since February 8, 2018. At first he was kept in the abandoned central jail in old Dhaka but later he was being treated at Bangabandhu Medical University Hospital.
His family had twice before applied for bail, citing deteriorating health. But twice it was rejected.
After 25 months of imprisonment, the sentence of 76-year-old Khaleda Zia was conditionally suspended for six months on March 25 last year due to coronavirus situation. In the second phase, the suspension was extended for six months.
The sentence was later suspended for six months by the Home Ministry in the third phase in March. At the end of that term this September, his sentence was extended for the fourth time.
