Latiful Azam, Kishoreganj (Nilphamari): Jute farmers of Nilphamari Kishoreganj have turned to cultivating golden fiber jute after losing their own identity due to various problems of jute industry in the last few years. The present government is re-opening jute mills and emphasizing on multi-purpose use of jute. Farmers are dreaming of good yield of jute as the weather is favorable. Farmers are also expecting the expected price. According to the locals, they incurred losses by cultivating jute a few years ago. So they were forced to lean towards other crops.
Notable jute has been planted in different areas of the upazila. At that time, old jute farmers Lavlu of Chandkhana UP, Samad Sarkar of Bahagili North dhurakuti Maidan Para village, Fazlu of Ismail Dolapara village of Sadar UP said that the government has completely banned the use of polythene and started more jute mills everywhere. If the use of jute is ensured, the jute industry will get back its lost glory.
And jute farmers will return to the golden days. Habibur Rahman, Upazila Agriculture Officer, said the target for jute cultivation has been set at 389 hectares of land this year. This year, farmers are cultivating Bari-1 and 989 varieties of jute.
