Innocent imprisonment due to similarity of names Rajib of Haluaghat released on bail

Mohammad Abdul Awal, Haluaghat (Mymensingh): Disabled Rajib Mia, son of late Shahjahan Mia of Dakshin Monikura village in Haluaghat upazila has been sentenced to three months imprisonment for matching the name of the accused in the arms case. He was later released on bail on May 4 after presenting accurate information to the court.

It is learned that SI Abdul Barek of Haluaghat Police Station arrested Rajib from his house on February 9 in an arms case. He was sent to court on February 10. From then on he was imprisoned for 3 months without any guilt.

According to the statement of Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station, on November 3, 2015, a group of robbers were shot dead by the district detective police at a place called Al-Momin Fish Feed south of Churkhai Jamtala junction. The main accused Rajib and Ali Hossain were shot dead by the district detective police. Later, SI Mofiz Uddin filed a case with Kotwali Model Police Station. The main accused Rajib is absconding after being jailed for two years in the case. Although his address was shown as Haluaghat at the time of arrest, his address in CS is Bijgiripara in Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur district.

Rajib, who has an innocent disability, said that he broke two legs in a road accident in 2012. He was driving an autorickshaw with his wife and 2-year-old son Yasin. When the police arrested him, more than a hundred men and women of the area, including him, declared him innocent, but the concerned officials did not listen to him.

Rajib’s wife Monowara said, “We have nothing, we are very poor people without help.” On February 9, my husband was sleeping with his 2-year-old son Yasin. As soon as the police entered the house and opened the door with Yasin in their arms, the police forcibly snatched the child Yasin and handcuffed my husband and beat him openly. Everyone in the area cooperated financially to bring him on bail and we have lost millions of rupees.

Locals expressed their displeasure and said that without proper investigation, the police had hanged Rajib in an arms case. They demanded compensation and justice from the higher authorities of the police.

Rajib’s lawyer Md Hanif, who was released on bail, told this correspondent that the police arrested Rajib after the court issued the warrant, saying that he was not the real accused. Following the application, on April 12, the senior jail superintendent of Mymensingh Central Jail, Rajib, submitted a report to the 1st Additional District and Sessions Judge saying that Rajib was not the main accused. As a result, he was released on bail on May 4.

In this regard, SI Abdul Barek said, “Rajib was arrested according to the name and address mentioned in the court warrant, there is nothing wrong with us.” Although the CS of the case mentioned Nalitabari Upazila, Bijgiripara village of Sherpur district, how the warrant was issued at Haluaghat. Asked about this, he said that it was because the officers in charge of the court had issued the warrant without reviewing the statement and CS.
