The Prime Minister said, “This new chapter of development has been unveiled today as a result of the confidence and support of the patriotic people.” We will continue to work sincerely to fulfill the hopes, aspirations and dreams of the people in the days to come. With the joint efforts of all, we will be able to build the golden Bangladesh of lifelong cherished dream of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of a hunger-free, poverty-free and prosperous nation, InshaAllah. ‘
The Prime Minister said that the country’s largest Padma Bridge over the Padma River would be opened to traffic tomorrow. Greet them for their contribution and tireless work.
Expressing gratitude to the people on both sides of the bridge for providing land and assisting in the implementation of the project in various ways, he extended heartfelt greetings and congratulations to the people on the occasion of the inauguration of the Padma Bridge.
Sheikh Hasina said the World Bank has filed a case alleging corruption in the Padma Multipurpose Bridge construction project. A Canadian court has ruled that all allegations made by the World Bank are false, fabricated and baseless. All allegations of corruption are proved false.
“We have decided not to take a loan from the World Bank,” he said. When Bangladesh announced to build the bridge with its own funds, we got huge support from the people. Today we have completed the construction work of the dream Padma Bridge with our own funds keeping the power of the people in our hearts. I am grateful to the people. Bengalis have established themselves in the world as a nation of corruption free heroes. In the historic March 7th speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib, uttered in a thunderous voice – “We cannot keep 70 million people under control” – we have proved our own capability by being inspired by this eternal message.
The Prime Minister said the construction of the Padma Bridge has established uninterrupted, cost-effective and fast communication with the capital in 21 districts of the south-western region. The importance of this bridge in the multifaceted development of this region with immense potential is immense. New doors will be opened for the development of the region, especially in the industrial and tourism industries. Tourist arrivals will increase in various archeological and scenic places including the tomb of the father of the Tungipara nation, Sundarbans and Kuakata beach. The Padma Bridge will play a significant role in harnessing the agricultural and fishery resources of the flood-prone coastal areas and rapid marketing across the country.
Sheikh Hasina mentioned that the Padma Bridge will serve as a maternity ward in the communication system using the full capacity of Mongla seaport including the Pigeon seaport, bridges built over major rivers, Rampal and Payra power plants already established in the region during the Awami League government.
He further said that inter-country trade would increase through important land ports like Benapole, Bhomra, Darshana etc. located in the region. The bridge will connect electricity, gas, optical fiber and other services at both ends. As a result of the implementation of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge project, the overall production of the country will increase by 1.23 percent and this bridge will make a unique contribution to socio-economic development by reducing poverty at the rate of 0.84 percent per annum.
