Dulal Mia, Sunamganj : As the erosion of Surma river continues, more than five hundred families of three villages including a part of a government primary school building have been eroded and many houses have been submerged in the river. Thousands of people. Erosion of Surma river has started in Sardarpur-Dhanpur and Amaria villages in an area of about 2 km. The demolition has affected the old and new buildings of Dhanpur Sardarpur Government Primary School No. 14 along with important installations. The school was built in 1935. At present, half of the school’s tinsed pucca building and part of the school grounds have been washed away by the Surma river. Demolition has started in an area of about 2 km on both sides of the school.
Most of the houses of Joynal Mia, Jasim Uddin, Sadu Ali, Mahar Uddin, Juna Begum and Dila Hossain, residents of the houses adjacent to the school, have been washed away by the river. Now they are spending sleepless nights in fear of river erosion. They said, if measures are not taken to prevent river erosion, these villages will soon disappear into the river. As a result, thousands of people from more than 500 families of 3 villages of the upazila will become homeless.
Joynal Mia, a resident of Dhanpur village, said, “No one is looking for us. There is no government initiative to protect our home. The school next door is also sinking into the riverbed. There is a strong current in the river now. So my house could sink at any time. I can’t sleep. ”
Juna Begum, a housewife from Dhanpur village, said, “If my husband’s house goes to the riverbed, where will I go? I can’t find any shore. If the government stops the river from eroding, our lives will be saved.
Shimulbak UP Chairman Mizanur Rahman Jitu said, “A section of Dhanpur-Sardarpur and Amria is facing erosion of Surma river. Dhanpur-Sardarpur Government Primary School has already been allotted a place for relocation. I have contacted the concerned higher authorities and informed them about the river erosion. ”
South Sunamganj Upazila Executive Officer. Anwar uz Zaman said, “I am not aware of the matter. Necessary steps will be taken soon after visiting the river erosion area and talking to the Water Development Board.”
Executive Engineer of Sunamganj Water Development Board Samsuddoha said, “I don’t know the matter at the moment. I came to know through you. I will take necessary action by visiting the erosion area of Surma river in Dhanpur-Amaria-Sardarpur village of Shimulbak union.”
