In Satkhira, hundreds of villages were flooded due to Yas. One lakh people Waterlogged. Thousands of shrimp farms have been submerged

Abdul Hakim, Satkhira: Due to cyclone ‘Yas’ in Satkhira, several unions of Shyamnagar, Asashuni and Debhata upazilas of the district have been inundated due to breakage of Beri dam of Water Development Board (Pawbo) in coastal areas due to abnormal tidal rise in rivers. Thousands of bighas of fishing grounds have been submerged. During the full moon tide at around 11 am on Wednesday, the water level in the rivers of the district suddenly increased by 7/8 feet. During this time, the Paubo dams of Gabura, Padmapukur, Burigoalini, Ramjannagar and Nurnagar Unions of Dwip Union of Shyamnagar Upazila broke and the tidal water entered the locality and flooded many fishing grounds.

In most of the unions of the upazila, the tidal water enters the locality by overcoming the Paubo Beri dam. Extreme panic spread in people’s minds. Around the same time, water from Kherikhonia and Kholpetua rivers of Asashuni upazila overflowed. And in a short time, water entered some villages including Harikhali, Chakna, Kalyanpur, Ruiarbil of Pratapnagar Union, Nakna of Anulia Union by breaking the Beri dam of about 20 points. The Ichhamati river in Debhata upazila broke the Beri dam in Harddah area due to high tide and water entered the locality.

Thousands of fish in all these areas become monotonous in the water within a few hours. The people of the half-built houses have run out of water. Despite all preparations by the district administration, people’s lives have been endangered due to heavy water pressure, mild storms and torrential rains. The people’s representatives of the area were not seen doing any work except inspecting the area. The people of the coastal areas of the district have already been badly affected by Cyclone Yas before the cyclone Foni, Bulbul, Amphan.
