Engineer Ataul Mahmud has planted palm seeds on rural roads and river banks with the youth of his village to prevent lightning and maintain the balance of the environment. He has completed the work of sowing 5,000 palm seeds in four steps. He inaugurated the program by planting 2,000 palm seeds on the Shalgrampur-Kalian road in Betua village of the upazila on September 16. Ataul Mahmud’s home is in Betua village of the upazila. He is a member of the Information and Research Sub-Committee of the Central Awami League. He was also the former general secretary of BUET Chhatra League.
Engineer Ataul Mahmud said 2,800 people have died in lightning strikes in the last 11 years. Ministry observation: Most of those who died were farming in open fields and haors. As of October 13, 329 people have died, breaking the previous year’s record. He does not want such an unexpected death. Therefore, in order to prevent natural disasters, lightning strikes and maintain the balance of the environment, he decided to plant 5,000 palm seeds on the roads and river banks of several villages in his area on his own initiative. He has completed the work of sowing palm seeds in four steps in the last one month with 10-12 youths of the village. He has plans to sow another 5,000 palm seeds next year.
Tahmid Sohel of Betua village in the upazila was the coordinator of the youth in palm seed sowing. The young college student said, “We collect 3,000 palm seeds locally in different villages.” Two thousand more seeds have been purchased. The program was completed today under the overall supervision and cooperation of Ataul Mahmud.
Another youth, Tareq Rana, said 3,000 palm seeds have been sown on both sides of the five-kilometer road from Shalrampur to Kalian Bridge via Betua in the upazila and 2,000 on both sides of the Tonki river from Shalrampur-Beheratail.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Chitra Shikari said, ‘Palm trees are very high and play an effective role in mitigating the damage caused by thunderstorms and natural disasters. Apart from this, there is no pair of palm trees to prevent soil erosion and maintain the balance of nature. I would like to thank Engineer Ataul Mahmud for implementing this program of planting palm seeds keeping in mind the growth and conservation of such beneficial trees. If everyone like him is enterprising, we will be able to deal with any disaster and the country will go a long way. ‘
