The upazila administration has launched a crackdown on illegal sand miners from agricultural land in Srimangal.
A local UP member was jailed for one month for illegally extracting sand and two lakh 11,027 cubic feet of sand and sand extraction machines were seized.
The upazila administration launched an operation in different places of Bhunbir Union from Monday morning to afternoon after receiving information about illegal extraction of sand from agricultural land.
During the operation, Satgaon Chaumuhani, Bhunbir Chaumuhani, Mirzapur Road, Bhunbir village and except Alisharkul village, local UP member Md. Abdul Wahid was sentenced to one month imprisonment by a mobile court of the upazila administration.
Under the overall direction of Deputy Commissioner Mir Nahid Ahsan, Srimangal Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate, Nazrul Islam and Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Aceland) Executive Magistrate, Md. Nesar Uddin conducted the mobile court. Srimangal police assisted in running the mobile court. Srimangal Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nazrul Islam said the sand seized in the operation was being sold at auction. Two sand extraction machines were destroyed at the scene.
Md. Accused of illegal sand extraction. Abdul Wahid was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment under Section 15 (1) for violating Section 5 (1) of the Sand and Soil Management Act, 2010. Others involved in the illegal business fled the scene. Regular cases will be filed against them. He added that the mobile court will continue to stop illegal sand mining. All those involved in this crime will be brought under the law.
