Extensive sand extraction damages farm land and roads in Joypurhat

Nazrul Islam: Sand traders have become reckless in extracting sand from Chhoto Jamuna River flowing over Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat district. `Three crop lands’ of local farmers and roads are being severely damaged by day-to-day sand trader’s violence.

There are several sands robbers including Khokan Mian in Panchbibi Upazila. He has been extracting sand for long six-seven years at a depth of at least 100 feet by installing prohibited and illegal dredger machines in tributary of Jamuna River in Baguan area of Dhananjee union in Panchbibi upazila.
As a result, hundreds bighas of three crops farm land adjacent to the river have disappeared into the river.

On the other hand, hundreds of tractors carrying sand are also causing huge damage to the roads. The streets are full of ditches. Massive erosion on both sides of the river has created huge reservoirs. Khokan Mian and his associates have become millionaires from zero by trading sand. Locals do not dare to open their mouths for fear of their horrible and reckless behavior.

When asked about reckless sand extraction Khokan Mina said, “I buy private ownership land in the area adjacent to the river and lift the sand.” I have not officially taken any Balurghat or river. He denied the allegations against him.

When contacted Barman Hossain, UNO of Panchbibi said, “I have heard about sand extraction. Necessary action will be taken as per law very soon after investigation as to how they are picking sand, whether they have taken a river ghat or government land.
