Except for one or two incidents, voting in 204 Union Parishads (UP), two municipalities and Laxmipur-2 constituency has been good in the first phase, said EC Secretary Md. Humayun Kabir Khandaker.
He was speaking at a post-election press conference at the media center of the Election Building in Agargaon on Monday (June 21st) afternoon.
The secretary said that the counting is going on now after the polling. Two people have been killed in clashes between candidates and supporters over the election. But no death is desirable.
He said one person was killed in a clash between two groups outside the center of Ward 5 of Hazariganj Union in Char Fashion Upazila of Bhola. In addition, clashes broke out with supporters of the opposition candidate after a man was arrested for allegedly casting fake votes at the Kamalapur Primary School polling station in Ward 9 of Khanjapur Union in Barisal’s Gournadi Upazila. One was killed.
Responding to a question from reporters, he said that since the candidates themselves were killed in the chase, the candidates would take action in this regard.
Adequate law enforcement personnel were deployed in the election. The EC secretary also said that if any further action is taken in the future, such untoward incidents will not happen again.
He said the Election Commission has been monitoring the elections held across the country. Necessary steps have also been taken based on the news that has been spread in the media. Voting in Laxmipur-2 constituency has ended peacefully through EVM.
Asked whether the postponed elections would be held before Eid, he said the commission had not yet taken a decision on the matter. This will be discussed in the next meeting.
He also said that the next phase of UP elections will be discussed in the commission meeting.
By-elections in 204 Union Parishads (UPs) and two municipalities for general and Laxmipur-2 constituencies were held on Monday (June 21) from 8am to 4pm.
