Police have arrested eight people in separate raids for smuggling stones into India through the Kompaniganj border in Sylhet.
On Sunday (June 6) morning, based on a tip-off, Companiganj police arrested four people on their way back with Indian betel nuts and four others for illegally removing stones from the Dalai Lama.
The arrested are Ali Hossain, 24, son of Amin Khan of Kalairag in Companyganj upazila, Nazir Hossain, 21, son of late Harish Miah of the same area, Ali Akbar, 20, son of late Ars Maram Ali of the same area and Jubail Ahmed, 21, son of Makhan Miah. Besides, Zakaria, 32, son of Abdur Rashid of Jatertuk village, Zakaria Hossain, 25, son of Abdul Amin of the same area, Asad Uddin, 20, son of Terab Ali of the same area and Tareq Rahman, 22, son of Jalal Miah of Rustumpur village were also charged with illegal quarrying.
Preparations are underway to file a case at the police station, police said. Companiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge KM Nazrul Islam confirmed the incident.
