Amirul Kabir Suzan. Mithapukur (Rangpur): The Jagirhat Sonali Bank branch of Latibpur union in Rangpur’s Mithapukur upazila has been spared major losses. A tunnel was dug along the bank from a room of a madrasa next door. However, the miscreants could not implement the plan as the tunnel caught the eye of the locals.
The incident came to light around 9 pm on Monday (June 14). Security has been beefed up at the bank.
The tunnel has been dug next to the Jagirhat road on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway. There is a large safety tank on the side of the road and the bank building is located next to it.
Locals said the madrassa was closed due to running corona. The boys of the village were playing football in the field of that madrasa. At one stage the football goes to the room of the madrasa. A teenager went to the room to fetch football and saw a large hole in the shape of a tunnel. After the game, the teenager returned home in the evening and informed his father about the matter. The father of the teenager came to Jaigir Bazaar in the evening and told the locals about it. Then the locals go to see it. Upon receiving the news, Mithapukur police and Sonali Bank Jagirhat branch manager Samiul Islam came to the spot.
The president of the madrasa Enamul Haque said, our madrasa has been closed for a year and a half. The main gate is also closed. But there is a room on the east side of the madrasa where there are some things including wood. This tunnel has been dug in that room.
Mithapukur Police Station OC (Investigation) Zakir Hossain said that if the tunnel had been dug up to the bank, a major robbery might have taken place. Upon learning of the tunneling, the bank authorities tightened security there.
Confirming the matter, Sonali Bank Jaigirhat branch manager Muhammad Samiul Hasan said Mithapukur police had come to the spot and investigated. The security of the bank located in the one-storey building has been strengthened.
