With this bridge, it would have been easier to develop the communication system of the people of Sunamganj Sadar and Doarabazar upazilas of Uttar Parmar of Surma, besides supplying agricultural products including vegetables produced in this area to the whole country. If the proposed customs station at Dolura had made it easier for neighboring India to connect with the rest of India, Mubarak Hossain, general secretary of Sadar Upazila Awami League, criticized the local MP for slowing down development on the Dharargaon-Haluarghat bridge and north of Surma.

A human chain was organized at Mangalkata Bazaar on Thursday at the initiative of Jago North Surma. Earlier, Sunamganj North Surma Unnayan Parishad had organized human chain and rallies on this demand more than once. Due to lack of communication, people do not get the price of agricultural products including vegetables. The bridge will benefit residents of Sunamganj Sadar Upazila’s Surma, Jahangirnagar, Rangarchar and Doarabazar Upazila’s Laxmipur, Banglabazar, Narsinghpur and Boglabazar Unions, he said.

Mohammad Sadiq had given a semi-official letter to the Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader stating that the demand for construction of a bridge on this route for the movement of millions of people has been mentioned for a long time. In the letter, he mentioned that if this bridge is built, several lakh people of Sunamganj will benefit. At the same time, the new generation will be able to visit the graves of 48 heroic freedom fighters who were martyred in the war of liberation.

Later, the former chairman of PSC also gave a semi-official letter to the communications secretary and the secretary of the local government ministry in this regard.

Local MP, Opposition Whip Pir Fazlur Rahman Misbah said, “During my tenure, there has been more development than ever before. I have spoken in Parliament for the construction of the Dharargaon-Haluarghat bridge over the Surma river. “I have appealed to the Hon’ble Prime Minister on the 1st of July. I have sought the intervention of the Hon’ble Prime Minister in the construction of this bridge. I am also seeking the intervention of the Planning Minister MA Mannan.”

Ebadat Ali, Project Director, LGED Bridge Project, said, “Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has declared Surma as a Class II river. “There is a lot of decision-making by the authorities. So there is some uncertainty about this bridge. Nothing can be said for sure right now.”
