A fast-track tribunal has sentenced five people to death in the murder case of college student Raju Ahmed 11 years ago in the New Market area of Rajshahi. At the same time they have been fined ten thousand rupees. The other nine accused in the case were also acquitted.
Judge Anup Kumar pronounced the verdict on Tuesday afternoon, said Entazul Haque Babu, the court’s state counsel.
The convicts are, Azizur Rahman Raju, Sajjad Hossain Saju, Md. Rinku alias Boya, Ismail Hossain of Brambhapur village in Durgapur upazila and Mahabur Rashid Rentu of Madariganj village in Bagmara upazila.
Lawyer Entazul Haque Babu said Raju’s house was in Hasnipur village of Bagmara upazila. His father Essar Uddin had a gold shop in Madariganj Bazar. Accused Mahabur Rashid was in dispute with Rentu over the land of Raju’s family. Due to this, Mahabur Rashid Rentu along with his associates went to Raju’s shop and demanded Rs 50,000. Rentu and his men vandalized the gold shop when they refused to pay. Raju filed a case in this regard.
He further said that after the case, Raju fled from the village under the threat of the accused and took shelter in Rajshahi city. He used to stay with a friend at the corner of Monnaf in the city. After that, Rentu hired four people for 30,000 rupees, planning to kill Raju in Rajshahi city.
He first tried to abduct Raju on March 15, 2010 from the Newmark area. Failing that, he stabbed Raju to death. At that time Raju was an HSC candidate of Daokandi Degree College in Durgapur, Rajshahi district. The next day, his father Essar Uddin filed a case against Raju at Boalia police station.
Entazul Haque Babu further said that there were 15 accused in the case. One of them died. Of the 14 accused, the court ordered the execution of five and acquittal of nine. There were 58 witnesses in this case. The verdict was announced after the court took the testimony of 31 people. All the accused were present in the courtroom when the verdict was announced. Following the verdict, five death row inmates have been sent to Rajshahi Central Jail.
