In a raid in July this year, the Sylhet City Corporation recovered 25 per cent of the evicted land at Sobhanighat in the city. At this time the boundaries were marked by evicting the illegal occupants of the land. 3 executive magistrates were present in the operation.
Meanwhile, four months after the incident, Anisul Haque, a claimant expatriate, held a press conference on Monday (October 18) at 9:30 pm at a restaurant in White Chapel, UK.
At the press conference, he claimed that the 25th century land was purchased by his father. Anisul Haque alleged that Sisik Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury had occupied it unjustly.
Sisik Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury held a press conference at Nagar Bhaban on Tuesday (October 19) at 4 pm to retaliate against the press conference held by Anisul Haque of the United Kingdom.
He told a news conference that the press conference held by Anisul Haque outside the country (in London) on the pending and ongoing case of the court and zonal settlement office under the government’s judiciary was tantamount to treason. Sylhet City Corporation is an important local government body of the Government of Bangladesh. Anisul Haque’s press conference abroad means that she is using the media and online media to spread propaganda against the country and the government. ‘
The mayor said the press conference in the UK claimed that all the structures, including his house, were demolished and that the Sylhet City Corporation could not show any documents of the court’s verdict or decree. But on that day, no one came to Sisik’s executive magistrate to show the documents. ‘
“The press conference has defamed the Sylhet City Corporation as the occupier and CC as the mayor, referring to me as the occupier of the land, not just me or Sisik, but the people of Sylhet metropolis at all levels.”
He further said, “In all cases, the development work of the land has been continued as per the decision of the court and so far I have not found any evidence of torturing or harassing anyone.” Ariful Haque Chowdhury, the mayor of Sylhet City Corporation, has repeatedly called me a land grabber, a leader in land grabbing, a film-style campaigner, a usurper of citizens’ rights and so on.
“As the mayor-councilor of the Sylhet City Corporation, a local government body elected by the people, it is our responsibility to provide services to the citizens and we are continuing our efforts as much as we can,” he said. I want to assure you that not only expatriates, but also any citizen of Sylhet metropolis will not suffer any loss. I strongly condemn all the officials and employees of Sisik, including the mayor and all the councilors of my council, for holding such a purposeful press conference in London. The reason is that it is against the law to hold a press conference on sub-judiciary during the trial.
At the end of the press conference, Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury presented the latest status of the ongoing case to the journalists.
Incidentally, in 2019, the court ruled in favor of the Sylhet City Corporation to understand the possession of 25.50 per cent of the land. On July 15 this year, after 65 years, Sisik took possession of this place in Sobhanighat of the city. On this day, the Sisik authorities marked the boundary by evicting the illegal occupants of the land. Then on the morning of July 5, Sylhet City Corporation’s property officer and executive magistrate Yasmin Nahar Ruma conducted a land reclamation campaign in the wake of the court’s verdict.
Sisik Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Sisik Councilor and other concerned officials and employees inspected the rescue operation.
