Anger over child’s death after EPI vaccination in Kamalganj

Kamalganj/Moulvibazar/Correspondent /

A two-month-old baby was found dead in Kamalganj of Moulvibazar 13 hours after receiving the EPI vaccine. He died on the way to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital at 3pm last Thursday. There has been outrage among locals over the child’s death after the vaccination. The baby’s father claims the healthy girl died due to wrong treatment. The hospital authorities claim that many more children were vaccinated that day. They try to avoid such allegations.

It is learned that Sanjida Jannat Tuha, daughter of Md. Jewel Miah, a driver of Nasratpur village in the municipal area, was vaccinated at the Upazila Health Complex as there is a provision to get EPI vaccine within two and a half months of her birth. The on-duty health worker administered four doses of the first dose of EPI to her hands and feet. After the vaccination, the girl suddenly started crying while sleeping at 12 o’clock at night. When she saw foam and blood coming out of her nose, she rushed the child to the health complex at night and referred him to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital. The doctor on duty there declared him dead.

The baby’s father Jewel Mia said, “I vaccinated the baby to stay healthy.” I never thought my daughter would die like this. He demanded an investigation into the girl’s death. He further said that he will lodge a written complaint.

When the vaccinating EPI health worker tried to talk on his mobile, his mobile number was found blocked.

Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer. M. Mahbubul Alam Bhuiyan said almost all the children were vaccinated at the hospital. Many children have been vaccinated on that day as well. There may be an initial fever or a mild problem after the vaccination. He added that there was no problem before this baby. Surveillance medical officers and WH representatives will investigate the issue.
