China has reacted angrily to the passing of a US warship through the sensitive Taiwan Strait between China and Taiwan.
They called the United States the biggest “risk taker” for the region, according to Reuters.
The US Navy’s Seventh Fleet said the controlled missile warship USS Curtis Wilbur crossed the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday in compliance with international law.
Calling it a “regular voyage”, they said in a statement that it demonstrated the United States’ commitment to keeping the Indian Ocean and the adjacent Pacific region “free and open.”
Condemning the US move, the Eastern Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army said its forces had observed and warned the US warship as it passed through.
“The United States is deliberately playing the same old game and disrupting the Taiwanese system. It fully acknowledges that the United States poses the greatest threat to regional security and we strongly oppose it, “they said in a statement on Wednesday.
Taiwan’s defense ministry said the US warship was heading north along the route and that “the situation was normal” at the time.
A month ago, the US warship crossed the Taiwan Strait. Even then, China accused the United States of “threatening” peace and stability.
About a week ago, Taiwan reported that 28 warplanes, including a Chinese Air Force nuclear-capable aircraft, had entered Taiwan’s “air defense identification zone.”
The U.S. Navy sends warships to the Taiwan Strait every month. The United States, like most countries, has no traditional diplomatic relations with Taiwan but is the island’s largest international supporter and arms supplier.
China considers Taiwan an integral part of its territory.
