About three thousand students go to school on excrement-garbage!

Staff Reporter :

In Sunamganj, about three thousand students have to commute to and from two schools on a pile of excrement and garbage.

Such a picture of the main road leading to Badaghat Public High School and Badaghat Government Primary School in Tahirpur of the upazila has been seen for several years. The school authorities and the people’s representatives are not paying attention to remove the dilapidated condition of the main road for the students.

Students and their parents said that there is always a pile of garbage around the tubewells on the side of the road. And on that pile people respond to the call of nature. Many people are leaving excrement next to this tubewell. Hundreds of students are coming and going to school by its side. The germs of various diseases are spreading in it. The issue is also a threat to health. Moreover, while going on this path, the students regularly fall prey to bizarre situations.

Nafisa Khatun, a student of Badaghat Public High School and Zahid Alam, a student of Badaghat Government Primary School of the upazila, said, We have had to endure this for the last few years. Garbage piles and stench are increasing day by day. When will we get rid of this misery, the stench?

Most of the students, including Tahmin Sarwar Adrita, a junior student of Badaghat Government Primary School in the upazila, have demanded immediate removal of rubbish from the side of the road and conversion of the main road to and from the two schools into a scenic road.

Habibur Rahman, headmaster of Badaghat Government Primary School in the upazila, said, “The amount of government allocation given to us in a year does not allow us to repair the road.” The people’s representatives and the upazila administration have to come forward to remove the garbage from this road and stop the dumping of excrement here.

In this regard, Tahirpur Upazila Parishad Chairman Koruna Sindhu Chowdhury Babul said, “Measures will be taken to remove the misery of the students on this road as soon as possible by cleaning the garbage.” We want to rebuild the road. For this, necessary action will be taken on behalf of the Upazila Parishad by inspecting the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and local people’s representatives.
