A complaint has been received against some BCL leaders and workers for taking a student who was admitted to Rajshahi University for ‘proxy contract’ (taking his own exam through another) and demanding ransom. After receiving a complaint from the parent, the administration rescued the student from Sher Bangla Hall of the university. He was handed over to the police after admitting cheating in the entrance exam.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Motihar Police Station Ruhul Amin has confirmed that two separate cases have been registered in Motihar Police Station in the city on Friday morning.
It has been mentioned in both the cases that the student had an agreement with the ‘proxy circle’ for Tk 4 lakh 80 thousand. Most of which has been paid.
The accused leaders are Mushfiq Tahmid alias Tanmoy, organizing secretary of the university branch Chhatra League, Raju Ahmed, joint general secretary of the Sher Bangla Hall branch Chhatra League, Mahibul Momin alias Sonnet, a student of the 2018-19 session of the Department of Public Administration and Sakwan Siddique alias Prangan, a student of the 2020-21 academic year of the Institute of Education and Research. . He was seen in Chhatra League processions even though he did not hold any position in the premises. Mushfiqur has been accused of being involved in cheating in the admission test before.
The name of the arrested student is Ahsan Habib. His name is in the merit list in the science unit of the university entrance examination. Accordingly, yesterday afternoon, he was admitted to the Population Science and Human Resource Development Department under the Faculty of Science. His house is in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur.
According to the sources of Motihar police station, in the case filed by the registrar of the university, Abdus Salam, allegations of malpractice have been made in the admission test. Ahsan Habib and four Chhatra League leaders and two-three unidentified people have been accused there.
On the other hand, the student’s mother, Rehena Begum, has filed another case for kidnapping and demanding ransom and embezzling money through fraud. In this case, along with those four leaders and workers of Chhatra League, two or three other unidentified people have been accused.
Rehena Begum, the mother of the detained student, said that she came to Rajshahi last Wednesday afternoon to admit her son. Yesterday afternoon, the son left him sitting and went to admission. But when his son did not come even after 5 pm, he filed a missing complaint with the university administration. Later he came to know that his son was taken and beaten. Demanded Tk 3 lakh from son’s father on mobile phone. The administration released the abductors and handed over his son to the police.
Rehena Begum also said, “I came here with the complaint that my son was kidnapped.” If I had been told that he was admitted by fraud, then I would not have knowingly come here. If my son has committed a crime, let him be punished. But those who kept my son missing should also be punished.
The narratives of the two cases are almost identical. It is mentioned there that Ahsan Habib made an agreement of Tk 4 lakh 80 thousand with a group of proxy circles. In view of this, he came to Rajshahi yesterday and paid Tk 360,000 cash and Tk 60,000 check. The balance was supposed to be paid after admission. The student was taken from the campus to Sher Bangla Hall for not paying after admission. There, the accused threatened him with physical torture and knife. When he refused, the gang detained him and demanded another three lakh rupees from the student’s father.
After being brought to the proctor’s office, Ahsan Habib said that he had a proxy agreement with Sakwan Siddique alias Prangan in the admission test. There was some money left. So after admission yesterday, Prangan and some boys took him to Sher Bangla Hall and demanded three lakh taka. They also beat him up to take money by calling home.
Ahsan Habib’s father Saiful Islam told the media over the phone that a gang is demanding money from his son despite appearing in the admission test on his own merit. And at the root of this cycle is a university student named Mushfiq Tanmoy (Mushfiq Tahmid). Mushfiq detained his son at Sher Bangla Hall and demanded three lakh taka from him by identifying the premises. They threatened in various ways and asked to pay this money within an hour. He informed that he could not pay the money. At that time, they cut the call when they realized that they were going to record their words.
Saiful Islam said, “Even if my son is found guilty, then all those involved, including Mushfiq Tanmoy and Prangan, should be brought under punishment.”
However, Raju Ahmed, joint general secretary of Sher Bangla Hall branch of Chhatra League, claimed that he was not involved in this incident. He said, “Sonnet and Prangan are the main makers of this incident.” The student is admitted through proxy. As there was some money left in the contract with them, they brought me to the room next to me. After knowing the incident, I threw them out of the hall. Later, Provost Sir called and asked to call them. As I am the responsible leader of the hall, after that I called them and handed over the student to the administration through the provost sir.
Accused Mushfiq Tahmid, Shaqwan Siddique and Mohibul Momin tried to contact the cell phone several times but it was blocked.
Golam Kibria, President of the University Branch Chhatra League, said, “One person named Mushfiq has come up in this incident. However, we are not sure whether Mushfiq Tahmid is the organizing secretary of Mushfiq Chhatra League or not. But we will investigate the matter. If found involved, organizational action will be taken against him. And Raju was not involved in this incident.
In this regard, the proctor of the university, Professor Asabul Haque, said that the detained student admitted to them that he had been admitted through fraud in the admission test. He has been handed over to the police in this incident. Action will be taken against the accused if anyone is involved in demand or collection of subscription.
