Mirza Ahasan Habib : Galachipa Upazila under Patuakhali district is one of the most vulnerable upazilla. Every year various cyclonic storms hit in this upazilla. In this upazilla there are 03 coastal unions which are surrounded by very big rivers. Every year devastation damages have been made by various cyclonic disasters. This year in the deep evening of 26th May, 2021 Cyclonic Storm YAAS formed in the deep sea and hits in these areas. For this cyclonic storm high tidal surges formed and its high wave hits the closest areas to the rivers.
Some char areas of Galachipa upazilla having no embankment named Char Bangla, Dhalar Char, Mayer Char and Char Karforma. During normal time, this char areas go under water, then the only way of the people of these areas to come to the market places by boat. Fishing is the only source of livelihood for the people of the area. The people of this areas are very poor and they live under poverty line especially women leaded households. Maximum poor people live on the kash land especially beside the embankment. During the cyclone YAAS, high tides destroy the weak infrastructure homes of the poor coastal people.
For deadly virus COVID-19 maximum people who work in Dhaka and other places as a rickshaw puller or as labor became unwaged due to shut down crisis. JAGONARI, a Non-Government organization with the Financial support of Save the Children extended their hands through a project named BGD Cyclone YAAS Emergency Response Project to support the extreme poor people especially women leaded family, aged persons who are unable to earn wages, child headed family and persons with disability.
The project supported 400 families by providing 3000 tk. cash and hygiene materials support for mitigation COVID-19 risk recovering the loss and damages which caused by cyclonic storm YAAS. The Project supported another 100 families by providing house repairing materials whose houses are partially or fully damaged.
An extreme poor women named Nasima said that in this situation by getting the 3000 taka and Hygiene materials support we are now survive a couple of days as I am unemployed due to COVID-19 shut down situation. Like Nasima many other women who work in others houses as housemaid are very happy by getting the support in this situation.
