Five members of the Indian Army have been killed in clashes with separatists in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. One of the dead was an army officer (junior commissioned officer) and the other four were army members. The incident took place in Kashmir’s Poonch district on Monday (October 11th), Indian media NDTV reported.
Indian security forces opened fire on separatists during an anti-terrorism operation in Kashmir’s Poonch district, the media reported. Five people, including an army officer, were killed.
A total of five Indian soldiers were killed in clashes with separatists, the Indian news agency ANI reported. Among the slain soldiers is a junior commissioned officer. However, their identities were not immediately known.
According to the latest information, shelling is still going on with separatists at the scene. Security has been beefed up in the area.
Indian officials say Indian security forces launched an operation in the vicinity of Dera Ki Galli village in Surankot area of Kashmir’s Punch district on Monday morning based on intelligence information. They say intelligence has confirmed the separatists’ location in the area.
At one stage of the operation, the separatists started firing on the security forces. Indian security forces also retaliated. At one point, a junior commissioned officer and four army members of the Indian Army were killed by separatists.
