One person has been arrested while smuggling rice of VGD on the black market from Mashulia Purbapar of Tegharia Union in Habiganj Sadar Upazila. At that time 33 sacks of smuggled rice were seized.
The National Intelligence Agency (NSI) and RAB-9 conducted a joint operation at noon on Wednesday (September 29). Meanwhile, the locals have clashed with the black marketeers over the incident of seizing rice. Upon receiving the news, a team of police from Sadar police station reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Locals said the names of dealers and representatives in the area were not made public for mysterious reasons.
Kamruzzaman, senior ASP of RAB-9 Habiganj camp, said VGD’s rice was distributed among the beneficiaries of wards 7, 8 and 9 of Tegharia Union from Wednesday morning to afternoon. At that time some rice was being smuggled. After receiving information from secret sources, the National Intelligence Agency NSI and RAB launched an operation there. A trafficker named Abdur Rahman (32) was arrested in Hatena at that time. 33 sacks of government rice were recovered from him. The arrested Abdur Rahman is the son of Yusush Miah of Gobindpur village in Habiganj Sadar upazila.
According to the locals, for a long time, some groups including people’s representatives and dealers used to sell these rice on the black market without distributing it to the helpless poor on various pretexts. Even though people including black marketeers have been detained from different warehouses of Sadar upazila in the past, the cycle is not being suppressed. The law enforcement agencies are selling the distributed rice to the poor by showing their thumbs up. The case is being prepared. Maybe the cat in the bag will come out in the case.
