A court in Bogura has sentenced three to death, three to life imprisonment and acquitted one accused in the murder case of former union Parishad chairman candidate Tozammel Hossain in Gabtali. Bogura District and Sessions Judge Shahjahan Kabir announced the verdict on Tuesday morning. The life-sentenced accused, Majedur Rahman Pintu, was present in the court when the verdict was announced. However, the remaining accused are absconding. The court said that their sentences will be implemented after their arrest. The death-sentenced accused are Abul Kalam alias Babul (35), Mishu (30) and Manik (32). Those sentenced to life imprisonment are Delwar Hossain Dalu (68), Ashiq (30) and Majedur Rahman Pintu (46). An accused named Shanto was acquitted as the state’s allegations were not proven. In addition, the trial of two juvenile accused is still ongoing in the juvenile court. The incident began on the night of November 27, 2017. Independent chairman candidate Tozammel Hossain was hacked to death by miscreants in the Batiabhanga Dakshinpara area of ​​Durgahata Union in Gabtali.
At that time, he was returning home after receiving an invitation from a relative’s wedding. Local sources said that the attackers, who were waiting at the Charmatha intersection, hacked him with a machetes and fled. According to police information, the murder took place due to a land dispute and previous enmity. The deceased’s elder brother Momin Hossain filed a case with Gabtali Police Station the next day.
After the investigation, the then CID inspector Sakir Uddin submitted a charge sheet to the court against 11 people. The family of the deceased expressed satisfaction with the verdict. Police said that efforts are underway to quickly arrest the absconding accused.
State lawyer Advocate Abdul Bashed said, we are satisfied with this verdict. On the other hand, the lawyer for the accused said that we will appeal against this verdict in the High Court.
