Palm Saplings & Fencing Distributed in Nalitabari, Harmful Trees Destroyed

In an effort to prevent lightning strikes and maintain environmental balance, palm saplings and protective fences were distributed among farmers and institutions in Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur. Alongside the distribution, a campaign to destroy environmentally harmful trees like Acacia auriculiformis (Akashmoni) and Eucalyptus was also launched.
The initiative, part of the 2024-25 agricultural incentive program by the Department of Agricultural Extension was inaugurated on Wednesday in front of the Upazila Agriculture Office. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Farzana Akhter Boby formally launched the campaign as the chief guest.
According to agricultural office sources, a total of 350 palm saplings with fences will be distributed under this program, with 100 saplings handed out on the opening day.
Following the sapling distribution, the UNO also inaugurated the destruction program of harmful Akashmoni and Eucalyptus saplings, which is part of a compensation scheme for private nursery owners.
During the event, speakers including UNO Farzana Akhter Boby highlighted the negative environmental impacts of these fast-growing non-native trees.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Agriculturist Moshiur Rahman, Extension Officer Agriculturist Maudud Ahmed and Agriculturist Saiful Islam Khan, Sub Assistent Plant Protection Officer Rasheduzzaman Imran and other agriculture officials, local teachers, farmers’ representatives, nursery owners and community leaders were present.
