A press conference was held in Rupganj, Narayanganj demanding withdrawal of conspiracy and false case filed against journalist Rashedul Islam.
The press conference was organized by journalist Rashedul Islam himself at the journalist’s office located in Chhamu Market area of Purbachal Sector 3 of the upazila on Tuesday (July 1) afternoon.
Reading out a written statement at the press conference, Rashedul Islam said, “I have been engaged in the profession of journalism with dedication for a long time.
A powerful vested interest group has set out to tarnish my professional reputation due to my continuous reporting on various irregularities, corruption and drugs in the area.”
He alleged, “A group has been conspiring with the land I own for a long time. I have legally purchased 61.50 percent of the land at RS 2240, Gutiabo Mouza, from the heirs of Rohini Kumar.
However, the sons of the former CS owner of the land, Anath Mandal, Asanand and Chanmahan, who had sold the land in 1954, are now again trying to claim ownership of the land and occupy it.
Because of my protest, that party and a group supported by them have filed a false case against me.”
He further said, “Through this case, an attempt is being made to humiliate me socially and weaken me professionally.
I strongly demand a proper investigation of the incident and withdrawal of the false case from the higher authorities of the administration.”
Many local and national media personnel were present at the press conference. The speakers said that not allowing journalists to work freely and filing targeted cases against them is a major threat to media freedom.
They demanded that the case filed against journalist Rashedul Islam be withdrawn as well as ensuring the safety of all journalists.
