Locals have complained about the illegal construction of a market in Durgapur Upazila of the district, demanding that the Union Parishad building and the Phanda Bazar be protected from demolition. Meanwhile, the residents of the union have been suffering due to the closure of activities at Durgapur Union Parishad building No. 2 in Durgapur Upazila. Local residents of the area said that since the activities at the Union Parishad building adjacent to the Union’s Funda Bazar are closed, the citizens of the union have to go to Durgapur Municipality to receive any services. In this regard, many items are being stolen as the Union Parishad building is in an unprotected state. On the other hand, there has been a breakdown on the road adjacent to the boundary wall along the Phanda River behind the Parishad building. Traders in the market said that due to the construction of the market on the Phanda River, the river’s course has changed and the road adjacent to the council’s boundary wall has collapsed. Incidentally, the Phanda River in Durgapur basically refers to a part or branch of the Someshwari River, which flows through the Phanda area of ​​Durgapur Upazila. It is an area bordering Birishiri and Durgapur. Phanda Valley and Someshwari River are part of Durgapur’s natural beauty and are popular places for tourists. Local residents have alleged that Sohag Mia, son of Abdul Quddus, is illegally constructing a market on the riverbank. When asked about this, Sohag Mia said that he works for a private company and therefore does not live in the area. He also said that he has more houses in this market, and he is building this market to save them. In this regard, Durgapur Upazila Executive Officer Md. Navid Rezwanul Kabir said that the transfer of Durgapur Union is stuck in paperwork complications. He also said that he had heard about the construction of a market on the river. The official even said that he would investigate the matter and take appropriate action.
