In Durgapur Upazila of the district, the families of an 11-year-old girl and another teenager are trying to get married. The Durgapur Upazila administration has stopped child marriages after receiving such news.
The incident took place on Wednesday (June 11) afternoon in Bongram and Nagergati villages of Chandigarh union of the upazila.
All the wedding arrangements were there. The wedding party had also arrived at the bride’s house. In the meantime, upon receiving news of the child marriage, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Navid Rezwanul Kabir immediately rushed to the spot.
Later, upon discovering the truth of the child marriage, he stopped the marriage and prohibited both families from marrying off the child and the teenager until they reached adulthood.
A family from Bongram was also fined 500 taka. Another girl from Nagargati village was released on bail.
Academic Supervisor Muhammad Nasir Uddin, local dignitaries, UP members, Durgapur Police and Ansar members were present at the time.
In this regard, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Navid Rezwanul Kabir, on the morning of the incident, received information based on secret information and went to two separate villages, Nagergati and Bongram, and stopped two marriages.
He released the two girls with a legal ban on marriage until they reach adulthood and said that if they still try to marry them off, legal action, including imprisonment, will be taken against the guardians of the two families.
He further said, “We are taking a strict stand to prevent child marriage. If any incident of child marriage occurs anywhere, he called on everyone present in the area to immediately inform the administration.”
