Police have seized a truck carrying Indian sarees worth an estimated Tk 50 lakh in Barhatta of the district. The seizure of this huge quantity of illegal Indian sarees took place on Thursday, June 5, from the paved road in front of the Kailati Madrasa in Asma Union of the upazila. Barhatta Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Kamrul Hasan confirmed the matter.
Earlier, the leaders and activists of the Upazila BNP were alerted about the illegal smuggling of Indian sarees through Naihati. The consignment was seized with the direct efforts of several leaders and activists, including Asma Union BNP President Matiur Rahman, the elder son of former Barhatta Upazila BNP President and freedom fighter Rahmat Ali, Mizanur Rahman Selim and Alamin, Upazila Chhatra Dal member secretary Sajrul Islam Saju, Jubo Dal’s Ranju, Shahin and Chandan of the Sechchhasebak Dal.
According to Barhatta Police Station sources, based on a secret tip-off that a truck loaded with illegal Indian sarees was coming towards Barhatta from Naihati Bazar, the police patrol team verified the information and confirmed its authenticity. On Thursday at 4 am, the police seized the sarees and the truck from in front of the Kailati Madrasa.
Selim Mia of Asma village in Barhatta upazila said that some villagers were with the BNP leader and worker when the illegal Indian sarees and truck were seized. At that time, the driver managed to escape. As far as I know, many people from Barhatta, including Mamun, a fertilizer retailer in Teguria Bazar, are involved in this incident.
Locals played an important role in stopping illegal Indian sarees and trucks. In this regard, Asma Union BNP President Matiur Rahman said that former Chiram Union member Kamal and his son Murad are directly involved in this smuggling. To catch this smuggling, we set up guards at the intersections of the roads from the evening. Finally, we were able to arrest the truck in front of the Madrasa. At this time, the driver of the truck escaped by saying that he was urinating.
Upazila BNP General Secretary Ashiq Ahmed Kamal said that a truck carrying illegal Indian sarees has been seized. Legal action should be taken against whoever is involved in this smuggling.
Upazila BNP President Mostaq Ahmed said that when I got the news at night, I called the officers-in-charge of Barhata Police Station and informed them. At one point, when I received the call, I requested them to go to the scene quickly. I spoke to the OC from the scene on the phone. I asked him to seize the truck along with the saree. I even assured him that I was by his side. Those involved in this incident should be brought to justice quickly.
Barhatta Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Kamrul Hasan said that a consignment of illegal Indian sarees from Naihati has been seized. Information is coming in that many people are involved in the smuggling. However, necessary legal action will be taken after an investigation.
