To promote environmental development and urban greening in Dhaka, a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today, 1 June 2025, between the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and the Forest Department. The signing ceremony took place at the Forest Department headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka. The MoU was signed by the Chief Executive Officer of DNCC on behalf of the first party and by Mr. Md. Amir Hossain Chowdhury, Chief Conservator of Forests, on behalf of the second party. Under this MoU, joint urban forestry initiatives will be undertaken in various afforestation-suitable areas within DNCC, such as road medians, footpaths, canal and waterbody banks, and other open spaces. The goal of the initiative is to control air, water, and noise pollution, reduce urban temperatures, improve landscape aesthetics, and build climate-resilient infrastructure. DNCC will prepare and clear the designated land for afforestation, ensuring it is free of encroachment and waste. The Forest Department will plant trees and grass species, and oversee their growth for the first three months. Thereafter, DNCC will take over the responsibility for maintenance of the green spaces. Both parties may engage local communities, experts, volunteer organizations, and, where necessary, private sector partners to support the implementation of this program. Joint action will also be taken to protect the greenery from natural disasters and related damages. Chief Conservator of Forests, Mr. Md. Amir Hossain Chowdhury, stated that “this MoU marks a new milestone in protecting the environment and building a greener city.”
