2 dead, 2 missing in Meghna trawler sinking

A trawler carrying 39 passengers has capsized in the Meghna River in Hatia, Noakhali, due to strong winds and waves. So far, two bodies, including a Rohingya woman, have been recovered in the incident. In addition, district police member Saiful Islam (28) and a Rohingya child are still missing. The deceased are Md. Gias Uddin (53), son of the late Tofazzal Hossain of Bhasanchar Police Station and Daulatpur village in Feni Municipality, and Hasina Khatun (25), wife of Md. Tarek of cluster no. 61 of Bhasanchar Rohingya camp. Hatia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Ajmal Huda confirmed this information around noon on Sunday (June 1). Earlier, the accident occurred on Saturday (May 31) at around 3 pm in the Meghna River at Dubarchar, adjacent to Karim Bazar in the upazila. Meanwhile, the missing are Saiful Islam (28), a police constable of Sudharam Police Station, and Md. Tamim (3), son of Md. Tarek of Cluster No. 61 of Bhasanchar Rohingya Camp. It was learned that a trawler carrying 39 passengers, including 4 policemen, Rohingya patients, Ansar members, and people from various NGO organizations, set off from Bhasanchar towards Ali Bazar Ghat in Harani Union at around 2 pm. On the way, the trawler sank in the Meghna River at Dubarchar, adjacent to Karimbazar, 7-8 kilometers away from Bhasanchar. Hatia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Ajmal Huda said the trawler sank with 39 passengers on board. Of these, 35 were rescued alive. One died after being rescued. The body of a Rohingya woman was recovered from Ramgati in Lakshmipur on Sunday morning. Two people, including a policeman, are still missing. The Coast Guard is currently conducting an operation to rescue the missing.
