World No Tobacco Day celebrated in Gopalganj

World No Tobacco Day 2025 was celebrated in Gopalganj with a colorful procession and discussion meeting. On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, a colorful procession was taken out from the District Administration Building at 10 am on Saturday (May 31) at the initiative of the Gopalganj District Administration with the spontaneous participation of people from all walks of life and professions under the leadership of the Deputy Commissioner. The procession later circled the important roads of the district town and returned to the District Administration Building to end. Later, the discussion meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room “Swachhta” to celebrate World No Tobacco Day was presided over by Deputy Commissioner and learned District Magistrate (Joint Secretary) Muhammad Kamruzzaman. The event, moderated by Additional District Magistrate (ADM) SM Tarek Sultan, was attended by District Police Superintendent Md. Mizanur Rahman and District Civil Surgeon Dr. Abu Said Md. Faruk as special guests. At that time, officials from the district administration, government and private departments, teachers, students and guardians of various educational institutions, as well as officials and representatives of various NGOs working towards a tobacco-free Bangladesh were present. In the discussion meeting, the speakers highlighted the physical disasters caused by tobacco consumption, including various complex diseases including cancer. In addition, highlighting the ill effects of tobacco, the speakers said that the trend of tobacco cultivation is being reduced in Gopalganj. But due to the financial incentives of cigarette companies, it is not possible to completely stop it. In addition, it is necessary to impose the highest tax on tobacco products so that smokers are discouraged from using tobacco products. Everyone must come forward unitedly to stop tobacco cultivation. At the end of the discussion meeting, the invited guests presented prizes to the winning students who participated in the quiz.
