Waterlogging at Sariakandi Pilot Girls’ School grounds – students’ suffering

Polash Mondol, Sariakandi (Bogura)
Sariakandi Pilot Girls High School, a traditional educational institution in Sariakandi municipality of Bogura, has been suffering from waterlogging for a long time. The school grounds, established in 1968, are submerged in water even after a little rain, causing extreme suffering to the students. Local residents and guardians complain that there is no system to drain the water from the grounds as the roads and houses around the school are relatively high. Mud has accumulated at the main gate, making it difficult to enter the school. Students complain that their clothes get ruined and their books and notebooks get wet when they go to the classroom on rainy days. One student said, “The ground is very low.”
When it rains, there is no assembly before classes start, and I can’t even play sports. “It’s summer now, that’s why it’s like this. It would be difficult to come to school during the rainy season.” The school’s headmaster, Saki Md. Jakiul Alam, said, “Our school has about 1,500 students. It is also an SSC examination center. But since the ground is low, even a little rain causes waterlogging.” “This makes it difficult for students to go to class, their clothes get dirty, and their mobility is hindered.” Mujahidul Islam Palash Mandal, president of the managing committee of Sariakandi Pilot Girls High School, said, “This problem became apparent after I took charge.” If the ground is low, students have trouble going to their first assembly, sports, and classes. I have discussed this with the headmaster and committee members. An application has already been made to the District Commissioner and Upazila Executive Officer for allocation to raise the field. “I hope the concerned authorities will take action soon. As long as I am in charge, I will work to resolve this problem at the school.” Teachers, guardians, and students associated with the school have demanded that the relevant authorities ensure a healthy and safe learning environment by quickly developing the grounds.
