There are many challenges in improving the quality of medical care in Bangladesh. First, the lack of necessary resources for medical care, such as modern medical equipment and trained doctors, is a major problem. In addition, corruption in the medical system, untrained doctors and illegal clinic operations threaten the quality of medical care. Structural weaknesses, administrative complexity, inefficiency, and bureaucratic obstacles also hinder the improvement of the quality of medical care. In addition, lack of awareness about patient rights and medical negligence seriously affect the quality of medical care.

Many people in Bangladesh go abroad for treatment due to medical negligence. Although there are high costs, complications and language barriers for patients seeking treatment abroad, if the health system in Bangladesh improves, patients can receive quality medical care in the country and through this, Bangladesh can save a huge amount of foreign exchange, in addition to other benefits at the individual or family level. This requires a joint effort of the government, the medical community and other stakeholders.
In Bangladesh, patient deaths or suffering due to medical negligence are common, but there is a lack of a strong legal framework in this regard. The existing mechanisms for redress include criminal law, civil law, Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) and the Department of Health. However, the existing legal process is weak, complex and time-consuming, making its benefits beyond the reach of the common man. As a result, it is never possible to take strict action against medical negligence.
In developed countries, there are various mechanisms for redress in case of death due to medical negligence. For example, in the United States, there is a Medical Malpractice Act that helps patients get compensation. Similarly, in the United Kingdom, a complaint can be filed against the NHS (National Health Service). Similarly, in some South Asian countries, there are various legal frameworks to address medical negligence. For example, in India, patients can take help of consumer protection laws and civil courts to get compensation for medical negligence. Similarly, in Sri Lanka, there is a legal framework for filing complaints against medical professionals.
There is a need to develop an effective legal framework to protect patient rights and improve the quality of medical services. Strict action against medical negligence through enactment and enforcement of laws will protect the lives of patients and improve the quality of medical services. A strong legal framework must be developed now to prevent medical negligence. Stricter law enforcement must be strengthened and strict action must be taken against guilty doctors, unscrupulous drug dealers and other responsible health workers. In addition, there is a need to increase the training and awareness of doctors and take strong measures to protect patient rights. The interim government of Bangladesh must take necessary steps now, giving special importance to this issue of medical negligence.
