Vandalism and staff assault at Satkhira Sadar Hospital

Relatives of patients vandalized and attacked the emergency department of Satkhira Sadar Hospital after not getting medical care. The incident took place at Satkhira District Sadar Hospital on Saturday (May 3). It has been alleged that doctors and staff on duty at the hospital were beaten up.

Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Satkhira Sadar Hospital Faisal Ahmed said that at around 9:30 am, a patient named Shahin from Labsa area of the city came to the emergency department with a head injury. At that time, after primary treatment, he was sent indoors. The patient’s relatives became angry when they did not find the doctor in charge there. Later, they returned to the emergency department and got into an argument with the staff and at one stage attacked and vandalized extensively.

He also said that at that time, panic spread among the doctors and employees of the hospital. The attackers beat and injured the on-duty office staff Farid, Masud, nurses Sohana Parvin, Marjina Khatun and a person named Tanvir Hasan from Dhaka.

The injured Tanvir Hasan said, suddenly I saw a relative of a patient beating up the hospital authorities. At that time, he started recording the video on his mobile phone. At this, one of them got angry and punched him on the nose. This broke the bone in his nose. Later, the police reached the spot after receiving the information.

Satkhira Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Abdus Salam said, a patient from a fight came to the hospital with a head injury. After emergency treatment, we sent him to the ward. But as soon as he reached the ward, the patient’s relatives became angry and complained why the doctor was not present earlier. Then they themselves came and vandalized the emergency room and beat up our staff. Even a doctor from Dhaka, who had come to Satkhira for a survey, was beaten to a bloody pulp. After the incident, medical services in the emergency department were temporarily suspended. Later, upon receiving information, police and army members arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. At that time, the attackers fled after seeing the administration. Nas Marjina Khatun is filing a case with Satkhira Sadar Police Station.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Satkhira Sadar Police Station Shaminul Haque said that the police have already inspected the scene. Efforts are being made to identify the attackers by looking at the CCTV footage. A case is under process in this incident.

However, locals claim that the person who led the attack is Sohel Ahmed Manik, the leader of the volunteer party of Satkhira Sadar Upazila. People concerned at all levels of the district, including healthcare professionals, have expressed extreme anger and condemnation over the incident.

Meanwhile, a BNP source said that after the incident, the senior joint secretary general of the BNP central committee, Ed., has sent a letter to expel the volunteer party leader Sohel Ahmed Manik. Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
