Local victims have formed a human chain at Charamukha in South Bedkashi against the corruption of the Water Development Board and the contracting company. The human chain was formed on Monday (February 3) by standing on the dam built in the Mederchar area of Charamukha in South Bedkashi Union of Koyra Upazila and demanding compensation for the damage. The human chain was moderated by local social worker Aslam Chowdhury and was addressed by the affected landowners Karnadhar Mandal, Santosh Mandal, Pranoy Mandal, Moniruzzaman Bachchu, Prashant Mandal, Debabrata Mandal, Paresh Gain, Pulin Mandal, Gopal Chandra Mandal and others. During this, the victims claimed that the people of this township have to survive by fighting various adversities including natural disasters. Especially the people of this township after Aila have been severely affected. In addition, the people of this township suffer immensely due to river erosion every year. The construction of a dam in this area began in the last 24 years. Since the beginning of this work, the work has been going on with widespread irregularities. The employees of the contracting company, disregarding the rules, forcibly cut the soil deeply from the land of the locals. They started cutting the soil in such a way that there is a possibility of disrupting crop and shrimp farming later. They also claim that the way the soil has been cut has made those lands unusable. Due to the arbitrariness of the contracting company Amin & Co., agricultural and fish farmers are facing huge losses. He further said, “From Mederchar of South Bedkashi Union i.e. 14/1 Polder towards Padmapukur switch gate and from Tapan Babu’s house adjacent to Charamukha Kheyaghat towards Khalergora to Bachchu Saheb’s enclosure, without acquiring our land, they forcibly cut soil from our agricultural land with an excavator and forcibly took the land inside the beri dam. Then when we, the land owners, re-blocked it, the manager of Amin & Co. abused us extremely. We are willing to give land to protect the river dam. But that is through the process. But without any discussion, our land was taken and soil was cut from there, and we are affected. Therefore, we are demanding compensation from the concerned administration.”
