No confidence motion on Modi’s face
New Delhi Correspondent/
Forced to move no-confidence motion against the government. Assam Congress member Gaurav Gogoi, while moving the opposition’s no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, said they had no other option.
Gaurav Gogoi attacked the Prime Minister and said that he has bet not to open his mouth in Parliament. But Manipur has been burning for three months. The Prime Minister boasts of ‘one country’, but his party’s ‘double engine’ government has created two Manipurs. One is in the Manipur plains, the other is in the hills.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s return to the Lok Sabha led to more interest in the debate over the no-confidence motion. By and large, the idea was spread that Rahul would be the one to start the debate. But at the last minute, Congress changed its strategy. Well, even if Rahul is present in the meeting, don’t start a debate. He will participate in the debate next Thursday, when the Prime Minister is scheduled to deliver his reply. Why Rahul changed his mind at the last minute, the opposition and the government argued for a while.
During the debate, the opposition opposed the screening of the government’s work on Parliament TV. As a result, the debate was suspended for ten minutes. In the end, the speaker’s intervention stopped the government’s campaign.
Gaurav Gogoi said that the Prime Minister is tight-lipped about Manipur for three reasons. The first reason is that the state government is a complete failure in all aspects. Central government does not want to take that responsibility. Second, the equally failed Union Home Ministry, headed by Prime Minister loyalist Amit Shah. Thirdly, they have set a precedent of failure in the hands of those responsible for national security. Most importantly, the Prime Minister is silent as he has to admit his mistakes and take responsibility for his failures.
Gaurav said, they want to ask the Prime Minister three questions. First of all, why did he not go to Manipur even after plowing Delhi-Delhi? Secondly, after 80 days, why did you open your mouth? When he opened, why only for 30 seconds and that too outside the parliament? Thirdly, the chief ministers of various states including Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Tripura have changed two or three times. Why still the Chief Minister of Manipur?
Nishikant Dubey, BJP member elected from Jharkhand’s Godda constituency, took part in the debate on behalf of the government. Sonia and Rahul Gandhi were the targets of his attack. In some cases the mother and son are free of bail, how they are alive at the mercy of the judiciary, how Sonia is sacrificing her life to protect her son-in-law and establish her son—these things. He said, this is not a no-confidence motion against the government, it is a vote to test the confidence of the opposition. They want to see who is supporting and who is opposing.
Even if Manipur is the occasion, any policy and decision of the government can be discussed in the motion of no confidence. Sougat Roy of Trinamool Congress has raised the issue of ED, CBI towards the opposition. Comparing the BJP with a ‘washing machine’, he said that those who are corrupt today will become corruption-free if they join the BJP. A fresh example is Maharashtra NCP leader Ajit Pawar.
NCP leader Supriya Sule said, an adjective comes to mind when the government is mentioned, ‘arrogant’. Samajwadi Party member Dimple Yadav said BJP’s only job is to spread the politics of division across the country. Manipur is also doing the same. DMK’s TR Balu said that even after the death of 163 people, the Prime Minister of the country is silent. It’s not just a surprise, it’s a shame.
Refuting the government’s failure, Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the opposition is sending a wrong message to the country. Misunderstanding. 8,000 separatists have surrendered since the prime minister took over. Again separatism did not raise its head. Army’s special powers have been reduced by 75 percent under the Act. He said, though the name of the opposition alliance is ‘India’, they continue to oppose India. They have to pay for it.
As expected, Biju Janata Dal’s Pinaki Mishra opposed the no-confidence motion. The YSR Congress also said it would oppose the proposal.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in the BJP parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday, “The opposition has brought this proposal to test their strength.” They want to see if everyone in the coalition is in favor of it. He said that this motion of no confidence came before the Lok Sabha polls. We have to hit sixes with every ball.
