Staff Reporter, Sylhet/
Jatiya Party mayoral candidate Nazrul Islam Babul announced election manifesto in Sylhet City Corporation election.
He announced this manifesto at his main election office on Sunday (June 18) around 3 pm. Party leaders were present with him at that time.
Before announcing the election manifesto, Nazrul Islam Babul said that the canvas of a planned city is very big. A city is not planned just by making roads and drains. Sylhet city still has many problems. Apart from traffic congestion, waterlogging, there is a lot to be done. Besides, the size of the city corporation has increased a lot. From 27 wards to 42 wards. There are many problems in the extended area. New areas are far behind. So whoever knows this city well should give the responsibility of city development in his hands.
Babul said, no one can solve the problems of this city by ‘flying and sitting’. I leave it to you to judge how much it is possible for someone who does not know the city to meet the expectations of the city dwellers. I am a child of this city. I know both sides of Surma. I have walk in every ward of this city. So my appeal to the people of the city is to take everything into consideration and elect me by voting for the plow marks.
At that time, Babul said, I promise, if you vote for me and elect me as the mayor, I will make Sylhet a modern metropolis. We will take effective measures to reduce traffic congestion, including the safety of city dwellers, the construction of new roads and footpaths suitable for communication.
Babul mentioned in the manifesto
* If elected, I will take initiatives to make Sylhet a citizen-friendly, industry-friendly, congestion-free, environment-friendly, water-logged, well-planned residential city.
* I will develop Sylhet City Corporation as a public and responsible institution, Inshallah. Citizen participation will be ensured with the corporation in the development of the city. Citizens experienced in their respective fields will be involved with the standing committees for urban development. The existing city building looks like nothing but a multi-storied commercial or residential building. Von has no architectural heritage. If I am elected mayor, I will transform the city building into a beautiful city building with a mix of modern and traditional.
* Currently Sylhet city with 42 wards. So to ensure the development of the city and the overall environment, it has to start from the ward itself. Ward-wise development and anti-terrorism citizen committee will be formed by ward councilors and prominent citizens of the ward if elected. This committee works to ensure the development and peace and order of the area
will do
* The service sectors of the city will be strengthened. For this, short, medium and long term plans will be taken. Although a mayor is elected for 5 years but he has to plan at least 100 years ahead. So that the city dwellers can get the desired benefits. That’s what I want to do. Sylhet is an earthquake prone area. Apart from raising awareness to protect against calamities like earthquakes, it will be strictly ensured that building permits are properly constructed or not.
* Sylhet city is now very big. Especially the new wards have many problems. Civil facilities are almost non-existent. Therefore, the planned development project of new 15 wards will be taken up first. Initiatives will be taken to solve the problems of water and electricity in the extended area of the city on a priority basis and renovation of existing roads and construction of new roads.
* A major problem in Sylhet city is drinking water problem. This problem will be more pronounced now that the volume has increased. So an effective project should be taken to solve this problem. A year ago it was said that Sylhet WASA would be formed. But till date it has no name-smell. So it will not happen if you sit in the hope of Wasa.
* Multiple technical education institutes will be set up. Where scholarships will be provided to poor and meritorious students. Youth gangs are on the rise in the city due to lack of education. It will be controlled. Initiatives will be taken to rehabilitate them and train them in technical education.
* A modern library will be established under the initiative of Sylhet City Corporation. Sylhet was once a municipal library. There were many rare books. Now this library does not exist. It will be launched. Besides, initiatives will be taken to set up libraries in different wards of the city. Besides, all kinds of support will be given to libraries established by individuals and private enterprises.
* The number of working women in Sylhet city is large. But there are no necessary facilities for working mothers. So daycare centers will be opened to take care of their children. Breast feeding centers will be arranged for women at important places in the city. Apart from this, hostels will be arranged for working women to stay at low cost.
* Sylhet city is called spiritual city. Besides, Sylhet is also a city of political and communal harmony. The City Corporation will play a responsible role in safeguarding this harmony. Initiatives will be taken to preserve Sylhet’s history and heritage. Initiatives will be taken to set up museums and art galleries to preserve the memories of the Great War of Liberation and present them to future generations. There was talk of such an installation inside the Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar, but it was not actually done. It will be implemented soon.
Sylhet has a rich cultural heritage. At the same time, the region has immense potential for tourism. Necessary steps will be taken to develop the culture of Sylhet. Corporation will sponsor cultural activities. A well-planned cultural complex will be developed. Where there will be all kinds of facilities for cultural activities including theatre, cineplex. Besides, necessary steps will be taken to increase tourism facilities and ensure the safety of tourists.
* There is no playground in Sylhet. Day by day the sports field is falling behind. You know I have always been sponsoring sports. If elected, I will take measures to build playgrounds and expand sports in the ward under the initiative of the corporation. The city will be covered with greenery by planting trees.
* The number of low class and slum dwellers in Sylhet is large. Most of them are workers.
Also, several other issues have been highlighted in his election manifesto.
Earlier on Saturday (June 17) in Sylhet City Corporation election, Awami League mayoral candidate Md. Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury announced the 21-point election manifesto. In the manifesto he promised to build green-clean-smart Sylhet.
