BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “The leaders and activists of the ruling party are involved in taking over rivers in the country, especially around Dhaka. Their people are occupying the rivers with the connivance of the rulers. Apart from this, the current government constantly plays the drum of development. But so far I have not seen any plan of theirs to clean the river or make the river flow properly.’
He said these things at a seminar on climate change organized by BNP at Engineers Institute auditorium in the capital on Friday afternoon.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “There is no democracy in the country. Awami League government is doing whatever it wants to stay in power. They want to stay in power by selling the interests of the country.
Claiming that the government is not concerned about climate change, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Because there is no democracy, they are not accountable to the people.” And because there is no accountability, the rulers have failed to collect their fair share of the country. Their goal is only one, that is to stay in power even if by force. They are doing whatever they want to stay in power. In such a situation, if the people of the country are to survive, the system of democracy must be brought back.
Mirza Fakhrul said, ‘If you go to London, you will see how they have cleaned the Thames river. As a result, despite being such a big city, the water of the river Thames is not so polluted. But we cannot pass by Buriganga. Because of the stench, it is impossible to go over the river, it is impossible to go by the side. And when you go to Turag, you can see that Turag is dead! Now Dhaleswari and Shitalakshya have started. These are also going to death! Apart from this, the small rivers in Savar and Dhamrai are also being destroyed.
BNP Secretary General said, ‘We are destroying things that are inseparable from our livelihood. The government has not spoken to India about the Teesta. As a result, the northern region is going to be transformed into a desert. BNP leader Ilyas Ali may have gone missing because the government does not protest with fair share, rather protesting with tippaimuk.
