Bangladesh won victory on December 16, 1971, but the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was imprisoned in Pakistan. Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the independence of the country was elusive in his absence.

He said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion meeting organized by Awami League on the occasion of Bangabandhu’s Homecoming Day on Tuesday (January 10) afternoon.

Sheikh Hasina said at the meeting organized at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center in the capital, “We have achieved victory.” But our victory was elusive. When Bangabandhu returned to us on January 10, it was as if our freedom was complete.

The Prime Minister said, ‘Bangabandhu first went to the people after returning to the country. He went to the family later.

Sheikh Hasina said that Bangabandhu could not stay out of jail for two consecutive years and said, ‘Whenever he got the opportunity, he did something for the people of this country.’

Bangabandhu’s daughter said, “I learned to love the people of the country from my father. His only aim was to give a better life to the people of the country. Whenever he got a chance he did something for Bengalis. He had a lot of hope to build this country.

Sheikh Hasina said, ‘There is no precedent anywhere else that someone can build a war-torn country like this. It was possible only because of Bangabandhu’s determination.

The Prime Minister said, ‘His (Bangabandhu) trust was only the people of this country. A journalist asked, there is nothing, how to run the country. He said, I have land, I have people, I will build the country with that. He proved that.
