An extortion case against Joypurhat District Chhatra League General Secretary Reza
Nazrul Islam, Joypurhat: A case of extortion and beating has been filed against Joypurhat District Chhatra League General Secretary Abu Bakkar Siddique Reza. Salim Ur Rahman, regional manager of the institution, filed a case at the Joypurhat Sadar Police Station on Monday night for beating up the BRAC Seed’s Joypurhat representative for not getting the extortion money.
According to the case, about 10 days ago, District BCL general secretary Abu Bakkar Siddique Reza demanded 10 sacks of seed potatoes and Tk one lakh from Zahurul Islam, BRAC Seed’s Joypurhat representative and asked to meet him. After that, when he met her in the evening, he asked forone lakh taka. When he refused to pay, he snatched Tk 20,000 from Zahurul for the sale of potato seeds and asked him to pay the rest money immediately. Last Monday afternoon, Reza met BRAC Seed’s representative Zahurul Islam at a shop named Rakib Traders on Natunhat Road in the town and demanded Tk 50,000. When he refused to pay, he was dragged out of the shop, beaten and punched, causing serious injuries. Later, the people present rescued Zahurul from the spot and admitted him to Joypurhat District Modernized Hospital. Later in the night, Regional Manager Salim Ur Rahman filed a an extortion case on behalf of BRAC Seed at Joypurhat Sadar Police Station (Case No-15/706 of Joypurhat Sadar Police Station). In the case, 20/25 unknown people are accused including the name of Joypurhat District Chhatra League General Secretary Abu Bakkar Siddique Raza. When talking to Sirajul Islam, officer in charge of Joypurhat Sadar Police Station, he admitted the truth of the incident.
Talking to District Chhatra League general secretary Abu Bakkar Siddique Reza on mobile, he said, “I have gone to speak on behalf of the farmers.” No such incident happened before me. I have been falsely accused to politically degrade me.
