A muezzin of the mosque named Abdul Hashim (70) was accused of beating him to death with a bamboo while protecting his daughter-in-law. Three other members of the deceased’s family, including a woman and a child, were injured in the incident.
On Wednesday at 11 pm, the police recovered the body of the deceased and sent it to the district headquarter hospital morgue for autopsy.
The deceased Abdul Hashim was the son of the late Abdul Jabbar of Baragop Hill on the border of North Baradal Union of Tahirpur in Sunamganj and was the muezzin of Baragop Uttarpara Jame Masjid.
The family of the deceased and witnesses said that the family members of Muazzin Abdul Hashim had a quarrel with the family members of Zamir Ali, son of the deceased Yunus Ali of Baragop Hill of the upazila on Tuesday. Because of this, ignoring the arbitration, Jamir Ali forbade the members of the muezzin’s family from walking on his land and from taking water from the mosque’s tubewell.
When Zamir Ali, his wife Shahar Banu, son Nazir Mia, daughter Shirina, son-in-law Sohail Mia came to take water from the tubewell of the mosque around 5:30 on Wednesday, his family members got together and started beating Zabeda Khatun, the daughter-in-law of the muezzin, with bamboo sticks.
Jamir Ali’s sister-in-law Rashid Mia of neighboring Karigara, his son Al Amin, Rashid’s cousin Erkan Mia, who came out of the house to protect his daughter-in-law, started beating Muazzin Abdul Hashim with a bamboo stick.
At one stage Muazzin Abdul Hashim was killed on the spot when Rashid Mia and his son Al Amin hit him on the head with a stick despite begging for his life to be spared the brutal beating.
They then beat and broke the arms of the muezzin’s son Masuk, his wife Zabeda and their eight-year-old son Sakit.
OC of Tahirpur Police Station. Abdul Latif Tarafdar said that multiple teams of police are on operation to quickly arrest those involved in this barbaric murder.
