Srimangal (Moulvibazar) Representative: On this day in 1971, 24 heroic freedom fighters were martyred in a mine blast in Pak. The nameplate in memory of these 24 freedom fighters was paid homage with flowers.
On Sunday (December 20) morning, Deputy Commissioner Mir Nahid Ahsan hoisted the flag in front of the plaque bearing the name of the freedom fighter martyred in a landmine blast at the Government High School ground in Moulvibazar.
Later, they paid their respects with flowers at different places. Moulvibazar-3 MP and District Awami League President Neshar Ahmed, District Council Chairman Misbahur Rahman, Additional Superintendent of Police Ziaur Rahman, Municipal Mayor Md Fazlur Rahman, Upazila Chairman Kamal Hossain, former freedom fighter Jamal Uddin, Municipal Councilor Manbir Roy Manju and various political and social organizations paid homage to the martyrs with flowers.
On this day in 1971, when the freedom fighters were 4 days away from the Pak army, the freedom fighters started gathering at the Moulvibazar Government High School Muktijoddha Camp for the purpose of returning home. Suddenly, a mine planted by the Pak army shook the school premises. 24 freedom fighters died in this incident.
From then on, the people of Moulvibazar celebrated the day as the local martyr’s day. Apart from this, various organizations have organized commemorations, poetry readings and cultural programs in memory of the martyrs.
