Shabiprabi representative : 703 students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology are getting interest free loan from Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) to buy smartphones of indigent students to keep online education activities active in Corona situation.
Shabi Vice-Chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed said, “We sincerely thank the government and UGC for providing loans for the purchase of smartphones.
” It was a strong demand of the students. Shahjalal University of Science and Technology has been providing free 15 GB assistance for the last four months in addition to financial assistance to indigent students for participating in online classes. We will also make it easier for students to buy smartphones.
Muhammad Ishfaqul Hossain, registrar of the university, said the enrolled students would have to apply to the Softloan Approval Committee. The authority will then provide the loan as per the rules.
It is learned that at a meeting of UGC on November 4, it was decided to give a maximum loan of Tk 8,000 per person to 41,501 indigent students of 39 public universities to buy smartphones under soft loan.
According to the policy, students will be able to repay the loan in four equal installments or one-time at any time from the opening of the campus to the pre-certification period. No transcript and temporary or original certificate will be issued in the name of the concerned student till full repayment of the loan.
In the light of the recommendation of the ‘Soft Loan Approval Committee’ constituted by the Vice-Chancellor of the concerned university, the UGC has directed to allocate the students through bank accounts by January 31, 2021.
