Zaker ALi Shuva, Bureau Chief: Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rajibul Islam Khan has stopped two child marriages in one day in Kumarkhali of Kushtia. These child marriages were stopped by Mobile Court raids in Dayarampur and Hashimpur villages of Kumarkhali upazila.
Executive Magistrate and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rajibul Islam Khan said the raids were carried out on the basis of secret information.
Child marriage is a curse in building a healthy nation. It is the same thing to marry a girl at the age when she will study and play sports and destroy her future.
Two child marriages have been stopped in Dayarampur and Hashimpur villages of Jagannathpur union of Kumarkhali upazila on 06/11/2020 after receiving information from secret sources. In the incident at Dayarampur village, all but the bride’s mother fled. The bride’s mother was fined Tk 10,000 under the Child Marriage Prohibition Act 2017 and handed over to the local UP chairman on the grounds that she would not marry her daughter until she was 18 years old.
In the incident in Hashimpur, the girl’s parents were fined Tk 30,000 under the same law. The cooked meat seized from the girl’s house was given to the orphans to eat. The girl was handed over to the local UP Chairman on a bond stating that she would not marry until she was 18 years old. Upazila social service officer Mohammad Ali and Kumarkhali police were present at the time.
Strict punishment will be given according to the law to prevent child marriage. In today’s case, the girl’s parents were not jailed considering her age and illness. However, in the future, more severe punishment will be given to stop child marriage. Zero tolerance policy of the upazila administration has been announced to prevent child marriage and eve-teasing.
